CV

May 2016

I was a Conservative candidate for Leeds City Council for the ward where I live. I came a fairly distant third behind the LibDem incumbent and a Labour councillor who had been deselected from his ward in another part of the city. At least I got a fair number more votes than the UKIPper.

June 2011-

At a new model US law firm doing long engagements at clients including- interim General Counsel at a large global telco, advising and negotiating global supply contracts for the procurement business of one of the world’s biggest mobile phone companies, Senior Corporate Counsel for a major US IT security business, and Senior Competition Counsel for a leading pharmaceutical company.

March 2008-January 2011

Drifted towards the bottom end of the top 100 law firms, working in the new Leeds office of a Newcastle-based firm. Attempted to establish an EU/Competition practice with limited success. Did a lot of EU Procurement, State Aid and general commercial work instead.

July-September 2009: Seconded to commercial legal team of leading supermarket

July-November 2008: Seconded to Regional Development Agency, specialising in State Aid, Major Projects and ERDF

May 2004-November 2007

Top 10 national firm, set up and built EU/Competition team of 4 based in Leeds and covering Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Got some recognition in the legal directories and some big, high quality cases.

May 2000-April 2004

EU/Competition team of top rated but not quite Magic Circle firm.

September 1997-April 2000

Commercial Legal & Regulatory Adviser at a leading global telecoms company.

I also spent 6 months as a pupil barrister in chambers doing mainly white collar criminal work and 18 months in the Government Legal Service, first doing Competition Law in the DTI and being shouted at by Michael Heseltine, then prosecuting smugglers of various types of contraband for Customs & Excise and failing to persuade the Magistrates at Wantage that an animé film of a demon snake penetrating a schoolgirl was obscene enough to warrant confiscation.

Education

Good but not outstanding BA and BCL in lawyerish stuff and philosophy at Oxford University. Mainly science/maths A levels (and English for a laugh when I managed to persuade my mum that I really wasn’t going to study medicine and so could drop hateful Chemistry) at what is apparently the best state Sixth Form College in England. Exhibitioner at a very minor public school where I learned how to play most sports badly while not getting an EBacc, straddling the last year of O levels and the first year of GCSEs.
