Not so much disappearing as disappeared but I always rather liked the velour seats in upmarket cars of the 70s and 80s. Not the lurid dogshit brown dralon that Vauxhall would put in a Senator but the plush royal blue of a Mercedes 280 TE. Nowadays the choice seems to be largely between plain cloth that could have been used to make a dull but hardwearing M&S suit or leather. Both of which are fine in themselves, but there was always something rather comforting about velour seats in cars when I was growing up.
