Bryan Welch was my pupilmaster during the second half of my training as a barrister. We shared an office for the first three months I was at the DTI. He wore bow ties and fedoras and was the sort of person who found the name of the Brussel’s Metro station “Kunst Wet” hilarious. He collected bookplates. His wife made him keep most of his collection (and the books they came in) in his office at work. He booked a week’s holiday the week of the whole office moving so I ended up having to pack and unpack several hundred random books.
The office’s room number was 101.
